PROVO -- A Utah County man suffering from an advanced stage of oral cancer got some much-needed support Wednesday. His family and friends got together to help him fulfill one of his dreams: finishing a replica 1965 Shelby Cobra car.
Family and friends organized a tour of Kirkham Motorsports, a Provo company that builds custom Cobra cars, to help Paul Berg reach his goal of someday driving his car.
Berg began working on the car with his dad two years ago. That's about the same time as his diagnosis. Because he hasn't felt well, the car project has stalled.
Wednesday's tour was supposed to get Berg excited for Wednesday night, when friends told him they'd help him work on his car at a shop in Sandy.
As the tour ended, there was something else Berg had to see: His car, which he saw in pieces just a few days ago, was fired up right before his eyes.
Friends had the car for a week, and ever since, they've secretly been working on it almost around the clock.
"The body wasn't on it, and none of the interior was there, and there was still some things on the engine that had to be done," Berg said.
Thanks to an act of kindness from friends and strangers, one of his dreams has come true. "Wow, I never thought I'd see it done in my life; so that's cool, really cool," he said.
In fact, it was just 24 hours ago that car was in pieces. Unique Auto Body, which donated the custom paint job, delivered it to Kirkham's Tuesday night. The volunteers worked non-stop until 5:00 Wednesday afternoon, when Berg got to drive his car away.
