Fare wars making for good deals for air travelers

It's a great time to go shopping for cheap airline fares. Most of the major airlines are fighting a fare war at most of the nation's biggest airports.

"After cutting anywhere from 15-20 percent out of the system for the last 14 months, there are still empty seats and people are not buying tickets," says Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com.

Seaney calls the nationwide fare blowout a once-in-a-decade opportunity for cheap travel. He believes the best day to book a flight is on a Tuesday, when all the airlines have usually matched each other's sale prices.

Over at BestFares.com, CEO Tom Parsons agrees that he's never seen rates plummet like this, especially for international destinations.

As far as Las Vegas is concerned, he called Salt Lake City the cheapest place to fly to Sin City in the nation. "I love San Diego for 99 bucks," he told Utah's Noon News on KSL Newsradio.

KSL News checked some fares for 10 popular destinations from Salt Lake City International Airport. Here is a general list of the lowest prices that we found across the board, whether it was farecompare.com, Orbitz or some of the individual airline Web sites.

  • Denver - $100
  • Honolulu - $662
  • Las Vegas - $119
  • Los Angeles (area) - $129 through May; $200 for the summer
  • Orlando - $219
  • New York City (area) - $231 through May; $331 for the summer
  • Phoenix - $205
  • San Francisco - $189
  • Seattle - $225
  • Washington, DC (area) - $219

Each fare is roundtrip, without tax and fees, and was available most days between mid-March and mid-August, unless noted. Some are offered by more than one airline.
