SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A state lawmaker is proposing a bill that would strip some of the power from a state-sponsored citizens committee that addresses utility matters.

Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, is sponsoring Senate Bill 214, which passed a Senate committee on Wednesday.

The measure would make the Committee of Consumer Services, which represents the interests of Utah consumers and small business owners in rate cases and other matters, an advisory group.

The bill would remove the committee's power to determine what battles need to be fought to protect consumers from the state's monopoly utilities.

Committee of Consumer Services Director Michele Beck says the group's members are concerned its mission could be undermined by changing from a policymaking board to an advisory board.
