SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Senate has approved a bill that would prevent someone convicted of a gang-related crime from carrying a dangerous weapon for five years.
Senate Bill 28 would prohibit some convicted gang members from possessing guns, ammunition or anything that looks like a firearm.
Anyone caught violating the law would be guilty of a class A misdemeanor.
The bill is one of four gang-related bills being sponsored by Sen. Jon Greiner, R-Ogden. Greiner is Ogden's police chief and says the bills are a response to a rash of gang violence.
The bill passed Thursday 24-to-1. It will get one more formal vote before it is heard in the House.
