Utah isn't likely to get a big share of the federal stimulus money being set aside for road and bridge projects.
The Utah Department of Transportation says it has nearly $12 billion in projects it could start almost immediately. Spokesman Nile Easton, though, says the state stands to get only around $200 million from the stimulus plan.
Easton says the formula for who gets the funding is based on vehicle miles traveled per state, the number of roads and the number of lanes. As a result, states like California will get a much larger share.
The decision keeps in question projects like the expansion of I-15 in Utah County. "They're definitely high on the priority list. So much of what we can do with the funding depends on what happens with our local Legislature," he said.
But Easton says there are still numerous projects underway. As he puts it, don't expect a "dearth of orange barrels" on the roadways.
