Salt Lake police are investigating an early-morning attack as a hate crime. It happened near 1400 West and 200 South, outside a gym and a club that are known to serve a gay clientele.

"It's kind of a tough part of town. It's dark. It was early in the morning. It's an industrial part of town," said Salt Lake police Detective Dennis McGowan.

McGowan says the victim was waiting for a cab when someone approached him and started hitting him with a beer bottle. "We have very limited suspect description," McGowan said.

During the attack, the victim tells police the suspect yelled something derogatory about the victim's sexual orientation.

The victim was seriously injured. McGowan says there were no witnesses.
