(KSL News) A man who nearly starved his girlfriend's young daughter to death may be released from prison next year.

Michael Bowden was sentenced to serve up to 15 years behind bars for starving the 5-year-old girl, who suffers from cerebral palsy, while her mother was in Iraq. At one point in 2006, the child weighed only 12 pounds.

The Deseret News reports Bowden may be granted parole next November if he completes mental health treatment and an internal prison drug program.
