It was an evening of celebration for Latter-day Saints in Mexico City as they greeted President Thomas S. Monson, who traveled there today to rededicate their temple this weekend.
Nearly 100,000 Latter-day Saints filled Mexico City's stadium to hear from him and to watch a cultural celebration. The choir, the orchestra, and the audience added to the event, which was unlike any other in the history of this faith in Mexico.
Pres. Monson was thrilled to see them: 100,000 Latter-day Saints answered his wave with their handkerchiefs. "You will never forget this evening. It will remain in your hearts and in your souls forever," he told them.
After Pres. Monson's address, some 8,500 young people performed historic and traditional dances in native costumes, telling the story of their country and their faith.
In Utah, thousands of Latter-day Saints met in chapels from Logan to St. George to watch the events, celebrating with their fellow church members in Mexico.
Luz Garcia said, "Part of my family is there working on this project. I came to see if I found my family on that TV."
Haydee Brito said, "I was very excited because about 16 years ago I was married in the Mexico temple. This is a beautiful day for me."
At the end, performers and audience members sang to Pres. Monson a favorite Latter-day Saint hymn, "We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet. "
Tomorrow morning, Pres. Monson and President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, will rededicate the Mexico City temple, which has been closed for remodeling for the last 19 months. Utahns will participate as well, and we'll have that story on Eyewitness News at 4 and 10 p.m.
