SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The cost of paying overtime to guards at the understaffed Sale Lake County jail has nearly tripled.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the overtime bill climbed to $3.2 million last year, up from $1.1 million in 2003.
Jail chief Rollin Cook says the jail has dozens of unfilled positions.
Council member Mike Crockett says guard pay isn't attractive enough.
Guards are logging more hours. The Deseret News reported a year ago that guards were working 12 to 16 hours a day.
The Utah State Prison has a hard time keeping jobs filled too.
