OREM — Police have identified a teenager who was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting on Friday.
Jacob E. Albrethsen, 17, died Friday after being shot in a residence near 81 N. Paradise Drive in Orem, Orem Police Department officials said in a Facebook post.
Police say the teen approached them armed with a knife after two officers were dispatched to a “family problem,” Orem police Lt. Craig Martinez said Friday.
One officer tried to use a Taser to subdue Albrethsen, but it didn’t work, according to Martinez. Both officers then fired “several shots” and hit him, Martinez said.
Police say Albrethsen was a student at Orem High School. Alpine School District officials will have counselors available at the school for any students who may need them, police said.
“This is a tragedy any way you look at it,” Orem police officials said in the Facebook post. “There is still a lot of work to do and we really appreciate your support and patience.”
The Orem Police Department will be investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the Utah County Attorney’s Office will also be investigating, according to Martinez.
