Utah ski resorts are getting ready for the season. The president of the National Ski Areas Association, Michael Berry, is confident that the industry is almost insulated from the shaky economy.

"While we may see a few percentage points shaved off of last year's record number of 60.5 million visits, the fact of the matter is, if it snows, people are going to ski and snowboard," he said.

Snow matters more than money, especially when it snows, according to Berry.

"November, December snowfalls are more valuable than not in terms of getting going and in terms of creating an impression for the winter for the industry," he said.

"The sooner it comes and the more significant it is, the better it is," he said.

He concedes some East Coast types might fly to Vermont to save a few bucks rather than visiting ski areas in the West. Many resorts are offering discounts to warm up the season.
