The newly formed east-side school district has a name: the Canyons School District.

The last time a district was named was in 1918 when Daggett School District broke off from Uinta County.

More than 4,000 people chose these four names as their favorite: Canyons, Wasatch Peaks, Alta, and Mountain View. We spoke with the new superintendent, Dr. David Doty, earlier today about the new name. He said, "It is a historic event. This is quite unprecedented to create new school districts, both here in Utah, as well as in other parts of the United States."

He added that it was an exciting endeavor and a daunting task. He said, "There's a lot to be done, a lot of things to organize, a lot of things to think about, but it's an exciting endeavor."

The school district is comprised of Cottonwood Heights, Midvale, Alta, Draper and some unincorporated areas.

The new board was elected in June, and Superintendent David Doty was named two months ago. Doty said the district will start service in July of 2009.

After tonight, Doty says there's a lot of work to be done. They have to register the name, and get a logo and letterhead. Also, they need to divide assets between the new district and Jordan School District.
