SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Fourteen states, 10 cities and the U.S. government are backing the city of Pleasant Grove in its fight to bar a church from erecting a monument in a city park.
The case, which pits the city against the church known as Summum, is slated for arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in November.
Lawyers for the cities, states and government along with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and several religious groups have all filed friend-of-the-court briefs in the case.
Two groups have filed in support of Summum.
Pleasant Grove denied Summum's attempt to donate a monument bearing the church's "Seven Aphorisms" for placement in a park. A federal appeals court said that violated Summum's free-speech rights.
