The FBI says violent crime increased in Utah last year.
The agency's annual Uniform Crime Report says that despite a national decline, the overall violent crime rate in Utah rose 8.5 percent in 2007 compared to 2006.
In a report released Monday, the FBI says rapes were up 4.5 percent, robbery increased 14 percent and aggravated assault rose by about 7 percent.
The homicide rate grew by 26 percent. There were 58 reported last year, including the shooting at Trolley Square that killed five.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank says that while violent crime in the city was up slightly last year, overall crime rates went down, part of a trend over the last several years.
Salt Lake City had 1,449 violent crimes, West Valley had 594.
