A historic Brigham City building was destroyed by fire on Tuesday. Brigham City Fire and Police Departments responded to the fire at the historic Grist Mill building (currently Bott & Sons Monument & Memorial Art Company) on the corner of 400 E 200 N in Brigham City.

A woman escaped from the building's third floor, but returned to the burning building with an officer to rescue her 6-year-old son. The woman, child and officer suffered from smoke inhalation and were treated by EMS personnel on scene. There were no other reports of injuries.

Brigham City Emergency Services Director Jim Buchanan said a nearby resident reported that the fire started on the north side of the building. The mother said that she could see the flames below from a window on the third floor prior to her escape. The fire spread quickly to the south side and up to the top floor.

The Utah State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire and said that the cause is currently undetermined.

The Grist Mill began operations in 1857.

Bott & Sons Company, a monument business owned by three brothers, occupied the building and suffered a complete loss from the fire. Zions Bank is currently taking donations for the families in the name of D.J. Bott Family Fund to help them recover from their loss. Donations can be made at all Zions Bank locations.
