Police say the man ran over a bike with his truck during a race over the weekend.

The 41-year-old was arrested after he swerved at bicyclists on the Mirror Lake Highway with his truck.

Cameron Roden, a spokesman for the Utah Highway Patrol, told the Park Record newspaper, "He evidently got fairly close to a bicyclist and this bicyclist grabbed a hold of the mirror of the vehicle and the driver evidently swerved at him again while he was holding on," Roden said. "The guy was able to jump off his bike but the bike was run over." The cyclist suffered minor cuts and scratches.

The truck driver was arrested for aggravated assault and a misdemeanor lane violation.

To bike enthusiasts like Charlie Butler, such extremes aren't common. Still he says, "You know, sometimes you feel like people could have given you a little more clearance."

Butler rides often in Summit County. He says bikes have a right to be on the roadway, and he believes the vast majority of motorists are courteous. He hopes things will only improve as more people take to the roads on pedal power.
