UTAH STATE PRISON — An inmate at the Utah State Prison has died after he was attacked by another inmate, prison officials said.
Jeffrey Ray Vigil, 24, of Ogden, died about 7:30 a.m. at a local hospital, according to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams. He was assaulted in a common area of the Oquirrh 1 housing unit about 6 p.m. Monday, she said.
The Unified Police Department will investigate the incident. The name of the inmate who assaulted Vigil was not released Tuesday.
Vigil suffered head and torso injuries from being punched and kicked, according to Unified police. It was unknown Tuesday whether any weapons were used. Police were investigating whether one or two people attacked Vigil.
Vigil had been incarcerated since June 2, 2015, on a parole violation. His criminal history includes convictions for theft by receiving stolen property, failing to stop at the command of a police officer and drug possession, Adams said.
At the time of his death, Vigil was facing charges in 2nd District Court of felony discharge of a firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, failing to stop at the command of a law enforcer and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also facing potential federal charges, according to court records.
