MAGNA — Unified police began a homicide investigation Monday after the body of a man was found in the street.

Officers were called to 2900 S. 8990 West just after 3 a.m. on a report of a person lying in the road. The body of Steven Ryan Chambers, 26, of Magna, was discovered in the street with at least one gunshot wound.

"It appears to be a homicide," said Unified police detective Ken Hansen.

Residents told police they heard what sounded like gunshots in the same area about 2 a.m., he said.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said late Monday that Chamberlain likely suffered more than one gunshot wound, though police were still working to confirm that suspicion.

No suspects were identified as of Monday night, Bell said. However, neighbors in the area gave police several other tips.

"(Detectives) have what they consider to be some potentially good tips from some members of the community out there and hope to follow up on some of that information," he said.

There was no indication that the shooting was gang-related, Bell said.

"(Chambers) himself is not to our knowledge gang-involved," the lieutenant said.

Nothing originally showed drugs were a factor in the killing, but investigators haven't officially ruled that out.

Court records show Chambers was convicted of trespassing in 2013, theft in 2010 and possession of drug paraphernalia in 2009. Some court documents list Chambers' address as being close to where he was found dead, while another listed him as a transient.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Unified police at 801-743-7000.
