SALT LAKE CITY — High carbon monoxide levels caused residents from 24 units to evacuate an apartment complex Monday afternoon.

Salt Lake firefighters evacuated all apartments at the Village Apartments, 250 N. 200 West, after being called there around 2:15 p.m.. Questar crews were also called to the scene.

No residents were injured, fire officials said. Carbon monoxide levels were returning to normal levels shortly before 4 p.m.

Questar crews remained at the apartment complex to determine what may have led to the carbon monoxide exposure. Every apartment in the complex uses a gas furnace and oven, and the on-site laundry facility also uses gas, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Mark Bednarik. Exhaust coming a carpet cleaning company van that visited the complex may have also caused the exposure, according to investigators.

"There's a number of possible sources," he said.

The American Red Cross arrived at the complex to assist residents. Only about 15 people were home at the time of the evacuation.

Bednarik praised the apartment complex for keeping a working carbon monoxide detector in every unit.

"That's what alerted (one) resident who got out and called 911," Bednarik said.
