HOWELL, Box Elder County — A teenager was killed Saturday and two other people were hospitalized with injuries suffered in two separate ATV accidents in Box Elder and Duchesne counties.
A 17-year-old and his 16-year-old cousin, both boys from Idaho, were searching for cattle on a ranch in Hansel Valley, between Snowville and Howell, when they rolled their ATV about 9 a.m. Saturday.
The two teens were traveling about 20 mph down a slight incline when they "encountered a washout in the sagebrush and grass," the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
The ATV rolled and ejected both boys. The 17-year-old, whose name was not released Saturday, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old was flown by medical helicopter to Ogden Regional Medical Centerwith both two broken arms, the release states.
In Fruitland, Duchesne County, a 30-year-old man was riding a 4-wheeler with a group of people on Currant Creek Mountain about 4 p.m. when he apparently failed to negotiate a sharp curve on a steep grade, Duchesne County Sheriff's Sgt. Carl Reilley said.
"Nobody witnessed the crash," he said.
When the other members of the party noticed the man wasn't behind them, they turned around and rode back to look for him, Reilley said. They found the man at the bottom of a 25-foot embankment and called for help.
The man was still unconscious when he was flown from the scene by helicopter to a Salt Lake area hospital, Reilley said.
Witnesses told investigators the man, whose name was not released, was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
