WEST VALLEY CITY — A man died Wednesday night after being shot following an argument that began on a bus, police said.

Marco Cardenas, 22, was in "some sort of verbal altercation" with a teenage boy on a bus as it approached a stop at 3500 South and 5600 West, where the two agreed to get off and continue their dispute, West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said.

After the two exited at the bus stop, the boy pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at Cardenas, striking him at least once, police said. Cardenas, of West Valley City, was hospitalized and later died from his injuries.

Cardenas had first punched the teen before the gun was pulled, Vainuku said.

The teen's name and exact age were not released Wednesday. Police found the boy with the help of passersby, Vainuku said.

"A witness … had spotted the (teen) behind some nearby stores," she said. "That was a huge help in getting police right where they needed to be."

The boy fled through nearby fields and across some yards as police chased him, Vainuku said. He was apprehended and arrested.

Several witnesses came forward to report what they saw happen, according to Vainuku.
