VEYO, Washington County — A near head-on collision on state Route 18 on Monday critically injured a 64-year-old woman, who had to be extricated from her vehicle and airlifted to a nearby hospital, police said.
A 16-year-old boy was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck southbound in Washington County about 3:30 p.m. when he crossed the center line, according to the Utah Highway Patrol, and crashed into the Chevrolet truck the woman was driving.
The woman was trapped inside the truck, and firefighters worked to extricate her before she was airlifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center, according to a prepared statement from police. Her truck reportedly came to rest on its roof in a northbound lane.
The boy was also taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was listed in serious condition.
The front left corners of the vehicles collided, narrowly avoiding a full head-on crash, according to police.
The boy was wearing a seat belt, the Utah Highway Patrol said. It wasn't clear whether the woman was also wearing a seat belt.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday night.
