WOODS CROSS — A small dog gave highway patrol troopers a big job Monday afternoon when it ran more than a mile on Legacy Parkway, stopping traffic in both directions.
The dog's owner took it for a walk on the west side of Legacy Parkway and let it off its leash, which is illegal. The dog then escaped through a fence and ran onto the freeway, according to Clint Thacker with the Davis County Animal Control.
The dog ran northbound, then turned around and ran southbound between 500 South and a pedestrian bridge. It ran for about 40 minutes, crisscrossing across the two side of the highway, according to Utah Highway Patrol trooper Doug Moss.
Several drivers got out of their cars to try to help the dog, Moss said.
“People would get out of their cars and try to get the dog to come to them, and you know, that's a good effort, but it’s really dangerous for people to get out of their cars on the freeway,” Moss said.
When the owner showed up, he flagged Moss down and told him he thought it was his dog. He then went to where the dog was, and the dog immediately ran to the owner, Moss said. The owner picked up the dog and put him in the car.
Animal Control cited the owner $110 for running at large, no license and Places Prohibited, Thacker said.
