SOUTH JORDAN — Two people died Monday following a car accident that closed several major roads in South Jordan.
The accident occurred at 12:04 p.m. at the Mountain View Corridor and Daybreak Parkway intersection, according to South Jordan City communications coordinator Tina Brown. A semitrailer was headed southbound and a car was driving westbound when they collided in the intersection, Brown said.
A 46-year-old man from Sandy was driving the semitruck and had to be extricated from vehicle, Brown said. It took emergency responders 45 minutes to get him out, and he was airlifted to an area hospital in extremely critical condition. The man, who's name was not released, later died as a result from injuries sustained in the accident.
A 23-year-old woman from Herriman was driving the car and was also extricated from the vehicle after the accident, Brown said. She was airlifted to an area hospital in extremely critical condition and ultimately died from her injures. The woman's name wasn't released.
The southbound Mountain View Highway from Old Bingham Highway to 11800 South and Daybreak Parkway from 5500 West to 5200 West were closed for several hours due to the cleanup and investigation. The roads reopened just after 7 p.m.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
