SYRACUSE — A 15-year-old girl hit by a truck in her driveway while sunbathing has died, according to the family's LDS bishop.

Marli Hamblin was sunbathing on her driveway while listening to her iPod on Friday, according to Syracuse Police Department. A family member got into a Chevy pickup truck before opening the garage door and did not see the girl when backing out.

"It's just a tragic, tragic accident," Syracuse police officer Erin Behm said earlier.

"They determined there was no brain activity," LDS bishop and cousin Lance Hamblin said. "There was no chance of recovering, so the decision was made to let her pass and return to her Heavenly Father."

Hamblin said Marli was taken off life support early Sunday afternoon.

Marli was "energetic, full of life. … Just a great young lady," Hamblin said.

Marli's parents were grateful for support from community members and medical personnel.

"There's just no words to describe what (the parents are) going through," Hamblin said. "The devastation and tragedy — that's your worst nightmare."

Police did not release the name of the truck's driver, nor the driver's relationship to Marli, due to the sensitivity of the situation. The driver was "really struggling," Behm said.

An account has been set up at America First Credit Union under the Marli Hamblin Charitable Account, as well as a GoFundMe account* for people to make donations.

"Treasure your loved ones," Hamblin said. "Serve them, be with them and make sure you use kind words because you don't know what tomorrow will bring."
