NAPLES – A 16-year-old with a learner’s permit learned the difference between the gas and brake pedals the hard way on Sunday.

The accident occurred while the teen driver was pulling into a parking stall at the Naples Maverik Country Store. She was slowing the 2014 Dodge 1500 to a stop when she said her foot slipped off the brake pedal and onto the gas pedal. When her father told her to brake, she hit the gas pedal instead, according to Garrett Whatcott of the Naples Police Department.

The truck jumped the curb, hitting soda and water displayed outside the front of the store as well as the building’s front windows.

Whatcott estimated the the Maverik received between $3,000 and $5,000 worth of damage.

The truck received minor damage to its front chrome bumper.

Police did not issue any citations in the incident, and the family helped clean up the mess after the investigation ended.
