ST. GEORGE — A preliminary hearing has been set for a former Washington County sheriff's lieutenant charged with DUI.

Jason "Jake" Lynn Adams, 39, was arrested Feb. 9 after rolling his patrol vehicle, an unmarked Ford F-150, with his four children inside on state Route 17 near La Verkin. The children, who reportedly range in age from 8 to 14, were not injured.

The group was reportedly on their way to the shooting range, according to an Iron County Jail report filed in court. Officers responding to the accident noted that Adams "was very unsteady on his feet, unable to maintain his balance, slipping and falling prior to entering my patrol vehicle," the report states.

Field sobriety tests were administered and Adams failed, according to court documents, including tests to see if he could walk a straight line for nine steps and stand on one leg for 30 seconds.

Adams was arrested for investigation of DUI. He was charged in 5th District Court with driving under the influence, a class A misdemeanor, and making an unsafe lane change, a class C misdemeanor.

Adams, a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's office who was the lieutenant in charge of investigations at the time of his arrest, resigned from the department earlier this month.

At an arraignment Thursday, Adams entered not guilty pleas. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27.
