COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police have arrested two people they believe are responsible for burglarizing a home multiple times while residents were on an extended vacation.

Michael James Knead, 37, and a 17-year-old boy were arrested Tuesday after something left behind in the house led police to them, Cottonwood Heights Police Lt. Mark Askerlund said. He would not elaborate on what was found in the home.

Police believe the duo forced their way into a home on Royal Lane and returned multiple times, taking four firearms, computers, electronics, video games, foreign currency and other items, Askerlund said. They most recently returned over the weekend, he said.

Investigators went to several homes in Sandy and recovered most of the stolen items, including all four firearms, Askerlund said.

Items allegedly stolen
  • Four firearms
  • Computers
  • Electronics
  • Video games
  • Foreign currency

Knead may know the juvenile through his teenage son, Askerlund said. One of the two live near the home on Royal Lane.

Charges against the two could possibly be enhanced because of the stolen firearms, Askerlund said.

He encouraged residents going out of town to pause newspaper and mail delivery, leave lights on a timer and ask friends to shovel snow for them so their homes don't become targets for burglars.
