OREM — Trial is set to get underway Thursday for a man accused of running over and killing an Orem woman who was sitting on the sidewalk.

Orem police say 26-year-old Ramiro Serrano Hernandez had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he hit and killed 22-year-old Ashley Zimmer on Aug. 25. Opening arguments in Hernandez's trial are set to begin Thursday.

According to the police affidavit, Hernandez hit a parked vehicle near 844 N. 100 West before hitting Zimmer, who was on the sidewalk. His vehicle then continued over the sidewalk, through a fence, and across the grass before eventually coming to a stop.

Zimmer's husband, who was inside their home, heard the collision, ran to the vehicle and found his wife under the rear end of the vehicle.

According to the affidavit, Hernandez then got out and ran. Officers found him a short distance away hiding behind a dumpster.

Less than two hours earlier, Hernandez had been cited for being drunk and disorderly, according to Orem police.

Hernandez is facing one charge of automobile homicide with a DUI, which is a second degree felony. He's also facing charges of failure to remain at an accident involving a death, property damage, and no valid license.
