LAYTON — A horse is recovering after Layton firefighters rescued it from an icy pond on Christmas night.

The horse fell into the large, ice-covered pond near 1816 N. Fort Lane around 5:30 p.m., according to Doug Bitten of the Layton City Fire Department.

When rescue crews arrived, the horse was trapped chest-deep in the freezing water, Bitten said.

He said crews used a fire hose and a city backhoe to pull the animal out of the water. The rescue took about 20 minutes.

The horse's owner put it in a heated barn and covered the animal with blankets. It is expected to survive.

Bitten said a Layton firefighter recently received specialized training for this type of rescue.
