KEARNS — A man wanted on several outstanding warrants was arrested late Wednesday following a short standoff with police at his home.
Just before midnight Wednesday, the Metro Gang Unit was on the hunt for fugitive Bryan Smith, 30, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. They narrowed down the search to Smith's home, near 4700 South and 4500 West.
A woman at the home told police that Smith was not inside, something that officers did not believe.
"Detectives had seen him through a window," Hoyal said.
After unsuccessfully trying to get Smith to leave the house by yelling through a bullhorn, police recruited the help of a SWAT team. The team eventually resorted to using a battering ram to get inside the house.
Smith and the woman who spoke with police surrendered. "This suspect is a wanted fugitive. He's known to be armed, as a restricted person," Hoyal said.
The woman was not arrested, but Hoyal said officers planned to meet with prosecutors to review the case for possible criminal charges against both of them.
In April, Smith was charged in 3rd District Court with failing to stop at the command of a law enforcer, a third-degree felony, after allegedly fleeing from West Valley police. He eventually crashed into a tree and was driven to a local hospital, according to court records. On Nov. 18, a warrant was issued for Smith's arrest in that case for failing to show up for a mandatory court hearing.
In August of 2012, he was charged with felony drug possession. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Nov. 18 for also failing to show up to a court hearing on that case.
Smith pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in June, according to court records. In 2002 he pleaded guilty to felony drug possession and was ordered to enter a treatment facility.
Smith was also indicted in federal court, along with his brother, for carrying a firearm while involved in methamphetamine drug trafficking, according to court records. He was sentenced to six years in federal prison.
