WEST HAVEN — A small plane made a hard landing in a field in Weber County Saturday evening, and the pilot walked away without any injuries.

Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Streker said the sheriff's dispatch center received a report of an airplane down near 1940 S. 2725 West just before 6 p.m.

When he and fellow deputies arrived at the scene, Streker said they found the pilot uninjured.

The pilot told officers he was preparing to land at Ogden-Hinckley Airport when his started having engine problems.

"Five miles out, he started having engine failure and (knew he) wasn't going to be able to make it to the Ogden airport," Streker said. "So this was the best spot he could find to put the plane down safely."

The plane had minimal damage: the front landing gear bent, and there were scratches on the pilot side wing, Streker said.

The pilot, who was not identified by law enforcement, is very experienced, Streker said.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Association plan to investigate to determine the exact cause of the engine failure.
