CEDAR CITY — A man was arrested Wednesday after police found him with blood on his hands near a man laying on the sidewalk.

Cedar City Police officers responded to the report of an assault around 8 a.m. The allegedly assault happened near an apartment complex at 468 South and 75 West. When police officers arrived on the scene, they saw Brandon Thomas Sappington, 30.

Sappington began walking towards the police officers, and they noticed blood on his hands, according to Sgt. Jimmy Roden. The police officer told Sappington to halt, but Sappington continued walking towards the police officer and he put one of his hands in his pocket.

When the officers attempted to detain Sappington, he attempted to head butt and kick the officers. Sappington was arrested and booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility.

Upon further investigation, police officers found an adult male victim lying on the sidewalk near where Sappington had been arrested. The victim had several serious injuries including a large laceration on his head.

The victim was transported to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City, and was later airlifted to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. The victim is in critical condition. His name has not been released pending notification of family.

Sappington was arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and interference with an arrest.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
