Plows are out in full force. But you may find as you try to leave for work this morning, your neighborhood side streets might not be as clean as you'd like them to be.

Here are some tips to help you get from your home to the freeway.

Driving tips

  • Make sure all snow and ice are removed from your car, even your headlights.
  • If you get stuck, do not spin your wheels. Try turning them from side to side.
  • If that doesn't work, put salt or kitty litter in your wheel's path.
  • Drive slowly through unplowed streets.
  • Brake gently to avoid skidding.

Salt Lake City crews have about 1,700 miles to plow when the weather gets rough. Main roads and streets that lead to hospitals and fire stations are plowed first. Once priority-one roads are clear, remaining roads are plowed according to a set sequence the city already has in place.

Most importantly, the city hopes that residents are patient and understanding when it comes to snow removal.
