BOX ELDER COUNTY — Authorities have found a family of five missing in the vicinity of a wildfire.
Box Elder County Sheriff's search and rescue team located the family at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The family includes a mother, a father and three children ages 11, 12 and 13. They started a hike toward Inspiration Point Monday, but when they didn't show up Tuesday afternoon, the search and rescue team was called.
Sheriff Lynn Yeates said all were in good condition when they were found. They were found in a rugged, remote area near Perry Canyon, about 10 miles away from where the wildfire is burning.
"It was really scary," said Andrew Cowsert, one of the rescued hikers. "We were trying to get out and we weren't sure if we were going to get out in time."
Searchers originally thought the family may have set that fire to signal their location. But because of the distance between the fire and the place where the family was located, searchers aren't so sure of that theory anymore.
Yeates said the family members had been dropped off at Perry Reservoir on Monday for a camping trip, and were supposed to be hiking through Perry Canyon and return Tuesday at 3 p.m.
The search began after a relative reported the family missing when they didn't return Tuesday afternoon.
