AMERICAN FORK — A Murray woman was arrested after she assaulted an 86-year-old woman in an act of vengeance, police said.

Jeanne Mace, 42, is accused of breaking into the American Fork woman's home on Tuesday around 8 p.m. Police said Mace lost custody of her children about a year ago to her former partner, the woman's granddaughter.

Police said Mace threw the elderly woman against a wall, then threw her on the floor and repeatedly hit her in the head, causing head injuries.

"I think an attack on an 86-year-old woman who lives alone is brutal," said American Fork police Sgt. Gregg Ludlow.

The victim said Mace acted out in revenge. Police said Mace told the victim "someone is going to pay" for taking away her children.

The woman's son later found she had been attacked and called police. Mace was later located and arrested.

"There is reason to believe she was under the influence of alcohol," Ludlow said. "We did notice an odor of alcohol on her, as officers interviewed her."

According to court documents, Mace was charged with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, and possession or use of a controlled substance, a class B misdemeanor.

Court documents surrounding the custody case include allegations of domestic violence.

Police say the victim is recovering from her injuries.

Mace is being held on $10,000 bail in the Utah County Jail. She is scheduled to make her first court appearance Friday.
