(KSL News) Opening statements began this morning in the trial of a man charged with brutally murdering an elderly woman in her Salt Lake City home.
Floyd Maestas could face the death penalty if convicted of the murder of Donna Lou Bott in October of 2004. Police say Maestas had a history of attacking older women at the time of the break-in and murder.
Today prosecutors told the 14-panel jury that they will hear from two co-defendants who were with Maestas at the time of the crime. Both men pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for their testimony.
The trial is expected to last two weeks.
