PROVO — A small fire caused minor damage to an under-construction addition to BYU's Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum Monday morning.
Cutting work was being performed on the second level of the addition using a blow torch. Embers from that cutting dropped down to the lower level of the construction site and ignited insulation on the wall, according to BYU spokesperson Carrie Jenkins.
The fire threw black smoke into the air and flames roughly six feet high.
Provo Fire Department was called at about 11:10 a.m.. They had the fire out within two minutes of arriving at the scene.
There was some damage to the external wall, but Jenkins said the wall was made of concrete and brick and the damage was minor. She said construction resumed shortly after the fire was put out.
A report on whether the fire would delay completion of the addition was not available.
