MIDVALE — Unified Police responded after a man threatened to harm himself inside a hotel room in Midvale.

The UPD were notified after the California man sent a message to his family on Facebook, threatening to commit suicide. The police officers made contact with the suspect at the Motel 6 on 7263 Catalpa Road. The man barricaded himself in the room, and refused to open the door.

The UPD attempted to negotiate with the man for several hours on a cellphone, but he began to cut himself with a knife, according to Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

"The officers kicked in the door in an attempt to stop the man from hurting himself," Lt. Hoyal said.

The man was pepper sprayed and tased and transported to a local hospital. According to Lt. Hoyal, the man's cut wounds were fairly minor. The man also received pyschiatric treatment, and will be evaluated for a 72 hour period.

Lt. Hoyal said the man had been listed as a missing, endangered person by the NCIC.
