RICHFIELD — An 18-year-old woman was shot in the chest by a rifle that accidentally discharged Sunday.

Cheyenne Hibberd and her friend Jesse Warenski, 22, were driving around when they got a flat tire and went to a family member's house to change it. Warenski was reaching into the back seat of the truck to grab a tire iron when a .30-06 caliber rifle discharged, according to the Sevier County Sheriff's Office.

The bullet entered her left side and exited her body above her right breast. Hibberd then began walking, saying all she could think about was "taking a walk," according to the sheriff's office. She soon noticed pain in her left side, saw blood and eventually collapsed along Heppler's Road.

Warenski called a friend who then called an ambulance. Hibberd was transported via Life Flight to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.

The sheriff's office does not suspect foul play or criminal intent in the incident.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
