Andrew Adams, KSL NewsradioSouth Jordan is thinking over creating its own school district after east-siders bolted from the Jordan School District. The city just received back a feasibility study.
Cities remaining in the old Jordan School District could get bitten, especially if South Jordan and West Jordan team up to create a new district.
Herriman, Riverton and Bluffdale wouldn't just see an 18 percent tax hike from the east-siders leaving. If South Jordan and West Jordan team up to create a new district, it would cost taxpayers in those cities 27 percent more on top of the 18 percent.
South Jordan also could go it alone. City manager Rick Horst says the idea right now is to explore options.
"Everyone is concerned about costs, but everyone is also concerned about quality education, and we're trying to find what are the best options to review," he said.
If South Jordan creates its own district, it would cost taxpayers 8 percent on top of the 18 percent.
