LOGAN — A Logan family who has been going through some tough times received an early Christmas present this year.

The family has had some health scares with their kids in recent months, and while most people have have been getting ready for Christmas, the Mecham family is just trying to make it through the day — and they're getting by with a little help from their friends, neighbors and a local company.

Decorating the yard for Christmas was the last thing Justin and Barbi Mecham wanted to think about this year, but some friends nominated their house for a Christmas make-over from the Logan-based company Christmas Décor. The Mechams were chosen out of 20 families to receive the gift.

"It makes it just so fun for them and brings the Christmas spirit into our home without question," Barbi Mecham said.

It's been a tough year for them. Justin is self-employed and Barbi is a stay-at-home mom. They have four kids — the youngest, a 2-month-old born five weeks premature, and the oldest, an 11-year-old Sydney, who was diagnosed with cancer in October.

"It was really scary at first, and as we learned more and more about it, it just got less and less scary," Sydney said.

The Mechams drive to the Primary Children's Medical Center three times a week for Sydney's chemotherapy treatments.

"They helped us understand that it's not the end of the world," Justin Mecham said. "It is something that can be treated."

The gift of Christmas lights may seem like a simple thing to some, but for the Mechams, who have so much to worry about, it means a lot right now.

"We live in a great community and they've done so much for us," Sydney said. barbi Mecham said that is why the family is getting through their challenges as well as they are, and "that's why Sydney is doing as well as she is."

While the road to recovery may be uncertain, the Mechams are taking it in stride.

"I think it'll just get better and better," Sydney said.
