Whit Johnson reportingAt the BYU-Utah rivalry game, one Ute fan was head-butted in the face, his nose is broken, and now the he says he's never going back to Lavell Edwards stadium.
The "duel in the desert" provided plenty of excitement on the field, but in the stands the emotions took a violent turn.
Brett Johnson missed all the action at the end of the game. He was busy trying to track down police and someone to help him with his broken nose. As a Utah fan, Brett has been going to these games for years but never thought he would be the victim of a violent assault. For this die-hard Ute, the end of the game came with something more painful than the loss.
Brett Johnson, assaulted at football game: "I've never had a broken nose, but I knew something was definitely wrong. I couldn't breathe out of it and there was blood gushing all over my face."
Johnson was punched and then head-butted in the face by an angry BYU fan.
"He said, ‘What did you say to my daughter?' I said, ‘I didn't say anything to your daughter other than to move out of my seat,' and then he lunged forward," Johnson said.
He says earlier in the game there was a young woman standing on his seat that he asked to move. He believes that brief confrontation is what led the man to attack him.
Brett's brother-in-law said, "It seemed like it was after the BYU touchdown because everybody was jumping up and going crazy."
After the assault, Brett went to the hospital with a broken nose and a large cut on his forehead. He's angry that his attacker was never caught, but there was one thing that hurt much worse than his injuries. "I'm a true Utah fan, so I would say the loss," he said.
Brett does not want to point fingers at the fans of BYU. He says this was just one person who acted out of line and should be punished.
BYU police were not available today to comment on incident.
