Licensing Officials Watching for Counterfeit Merchandise
November 20th, 2007 @ 4:21pm

(KSL News) With the big rivalry game between the Utes and Cougars coming up, officials from both schools will put pressure on counterfeit merchandise.

Fans on both sides of the in-state school rivalry will sport blues or reds this weekend. Counterfeiters see the rivalry as a marketplace for sports merchandise with unauthorized logos.

Enforcement officials will patrol Provo this weekend in search of counterfeiters. All counterfeit merchandise is subject to seizure.

"You don't even have to use our marks. If the product you're making makes the purchaser feel like they are purchasing a University of Utah product, then you fall into that category of trademark infringement," explained Shane Hinckley, director of licensing for the University of Utah.

Recent trademark laws not only protect phrases and words, but now they encompass school colors as well.
