FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- A man in custody since March will be released while awaiting trial in the death of a woman more than 27 years ago.
Davis County prosecutors asked that the trial, scheduled to start this week, be postponed until Jan. 8 because a witness was unavailable.
Edward Owens' attorney agreed Tuesday -- if his client could be released from jail until then.
Owens, 56, is charged with murder in the death of Karin Strom, 25, of Woods Cross. Authorities say she was strangled in her home in June 1980.
He was arrested in March after authorities said his DNA was under her fingernails.
Prosecutor Mike DiReda said he agreed to Owens' release because he needs the trial witness, who has health problems.
"The whole case doesn't turn on this witness, but he is essential," DiReda said.
Owens will wear an ankle monitor when he is released from jail this week. He will mostly be restricted to his home in Kaysville.
