SALT LAKE CITY — Ken Hemingway loved motorcycles almost as much as he loved his friends.
"If he was your friend, you had a friend," said Steve Montoya, one of the many loved ones who gathered in the Hemingway family's home Sunday afternoon. "He would never turn his back on you. Friends like Ken, they're hard to find."
Hemingway, 56, died Sunday morning after he lost control of his motorcycle on I-15 and crashed into a cement barrier, police say.
Montoya described Hemingway as an avid motorcyclist who regularly rode 40,000 miles each year.
"He lived for riding motorcycles," he said.
Hemingway leaves behind his wife, Dezi, son, J.J., and daughter, Amy, along with two grandchildren and countless friends, Montoya said.
"Ken has a lot of people who really love him and are going to miss him," he said.
Police say Hemingway was traveling south on I-15 near 1000 South about 11 a.m. when he veered onto the right shoulder of the freeway and struck the cement barrier and a fence post. He was thrown about 100 feet following the impact.
Speed is being investigated as a cause for the crash, police said.
