BOUNTIFUL — Police say a woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend after a day-long argument at a Bountiful apartment.

Police say the suspect, 43-year-old Shannon Sander, and her boyfriend, 52-year-old Michael Dunn, began drinking around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Then around 11 p.m. police received a call of a stabbing at the Summer Garden apartments at 2520 S. 500 West in Bountiful.

When police arrived they found Dunn with a stab wound to the torso.

Lt. Sol Olberg with the Bountiful Police Department explained, "He was having great difficulty breathing. Officers on scene immediately tried to help him but had very limited ability to do much at that point."

Dunn died at the scene.

Olberg said the couple had been arguing all day. "It was an off and on argument about different things," Olberg said.

Police believe Sander eventually grabbed a medium-sized kitchen knife and stabbed Dunn, then went to a neighbor's and he called 911. Officers located Sander walking along 500 West.

"They spoke with her about the incident and she ultimately admitted to stabbing him," Olberg said. "Our impression is that she was distraught and trying to get help to him right away and left to contact a neighbor."

Sander has been booked into the Davis County Jail for homicide, and police say she has been cooperating with the investigation. Police don't believe the stabbing was in self defense.

Officers say the couple has had an on-again off-again relationship for years and they don't know if Sander was living in the apartment with Dunn. Officers have been to this apartment previously, usually on calls of alcohol-related disturbance regarding Dunn.

They say Sander's criminal history includes only misdemeanors, nothing indicating she would be violent enough to stab her boyfriend.

A neighbor said Dunn was the landlord at the apartments and said, "I never would have expected this."
