SALT LAKE CITY -- A TRAX train hit and killed a 17-year-old male pedestrian Monday evening.

West Jordan police said that the accident occurred at approximately 8600 S. 3200 West. Police said the pedestrian was walking across the intersection when the Red Line train hit.

The Utah Transit Authority said there would be significant delays on the Red Line, and no service between 2700 West & Jordan Valley. A bus bridge is operating to accommodate passengers. Other lines are operating on schedule.

Witnesses at the scene say they saw the man step out in front of the train. No identification was found on the man.

West Jordan Police said that they are "now investigating (the death) as a suicide." The victim's parent's have been contacted, but his name will not be released until Tuesday.

This is the second death at this intersection in less than a year. Shariah Casper, who was 15 years old at the time, was killed there when she apparently did not realize that two trains were nearby, going in opposite directions.

At the time of Casper's death last June, before the line was officially in use, neighbors raised questions as to whether there was enough signage at the intersection, and whether there was a blind spot for pedestrians at the intersection.

About a week later, UTA began removing sound barriers along the Red Line to improve vision at some intersections, including 3200 West.
