SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Sandy woman was charged Friday with intentionally abandoning her 5-year-old daughter at a convenience store.

The young girl told police her mother took her to a convenience store where she had never been before. She then watched her mother run back to the car and leave without her, according to charges filed in 3rd District Court.

The child said "she was looking for her mom and then she was crying."

Witnesses say Flor Banos-Garcia, 35, drove to the Maverik store at 880 W. 3300 South, across the street from the Salt Lake County Jail, on Thursday. She and her daughter got out. Banos-Garcia then pushed her child into the store, ran back to her vehicle and sped away, the charges state.

A worker at the store observed the scene, which police say was also captured on surveillance video. Officers later arrested Banos-Garcia at her Sandy home, and she was booked into jail. She was charged Friday with child abuse, a third-degree felony. Bail was set at $25,000.
