SALT LAKE CITY — A man with a samurai sword was arrested and his girlfriend taken to the hospital with a stab wound early Thursday.

Police were called just before 12:30 a.m. on a report of a woman who was stabbed by her boyfriend. The woman was located on E Street between 4th and 5th Avenue, said Salt Lake police Det. Shawn Josephson. She was taken to a local hospital where at last word she was in surgery, he said.

Officers then went to the boyfriend's apartment near 300 East and 4th Avenue and through the window could see him "waving a samurai sword and cutting things up inside the apartment."

A containment of the apartment was set up, and the man eventually agreed to come out and surrender without further incident, Josephson said.

Jeremy Thomas, 33, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault. Josephson did not know if the stab would was caused by the samurai sword.
